From Support to Community: WRAP Basketball builds everyday Inclusion

Across Australia, the conversation around disability is evolving. The focus is shifting from simply providing funded supports to creating genuine opportunities for inclusion in everyday life — in education, employment, recreation, and community connection. It’s about ensuring that people of all abilities can participate fully, build relationships, and experience the same sense of belonging as everyone else.

This national direction is reflected in the growing number of inclusive, community-based programs and events across the country. These initiatives recognise that inclusion is about more than access — it’s about participation, identity, and joy.

At the Y, this belief is at the heart of everything we do. Our Inclusion Services aren’t just about providing support; they’re about creating pathways that help people with a disability move from formal assistance to authentic community connection. Through shared experiences, recreation, and friendship, we’re helping individuals build confidence and independence while being part of a community.

Celebrating 23 years of connection through WRAP Basketball!

One of the best examples of inclusion in action is Wrap Basketball, a much-loved Y program now celebrating 23 years of bringing people together. What started as a small initiative to make sport more accessible has grown into a thriving, welcoming community built on teamwork, respect, and fun.

This year, there were 575 participations in the program, supported by a dedicated team of 8-9 volunteers, and overseen by Y staff member, Julian. Together, the volunteers and staff coach, referee, and score games while ensuring every player is encouraged and celebrated. Not forgetting the families who look after refreshments and snacks for participants every week.

For many, Wrap Basketball is more than a game — it’s a place to belong. As long-time volunteer Felicity shares:

“It gives everyone something to look forward to, forms a sense of connection, and allows everyone to be themselves and to be celebrated for who they are.”

Programs like Wrap Basketball show the power of inclusion beyond formal supports. They help participants build social confidence, stay active, and form lasting friendships — essential parts of living a full and connected life.

Looking Ahead

As the 2025 Wrap Basketball season draws to a close, we’re celebrating with our end-of-season WRAP Bowling Party in November, recognising the achievements of every participant, volunteer, and supporter who makes this program special.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back when Wrap Basketball returns in February 2026 for another season of fun, friendship, and community spirit.

At the Y, we’re proud to continue building bridges from support to community — creating spaces where every person can connect, grow, and belong.
