Inclusion and Participation in everyday life

Inclusion isn’t just a concept — it’s something we experience in the ordinary, everyday moments that make up a life. It’s being able to join in daily activities, build relationships, try new things, and feel part of a community. At Inclusion Services by the Y, we believe true inclusion happens when participation becomes part of everyday. Here’s how we support that belief through meaningful, person-centred support of people with disability.

Person-Centred Support that enables Participation

At the heart of our approach is individual choice and tailored support. Our 1:1 Home and Community Support services are designed to help people with disability participate in everyday life in ways that matter to them — from grocery shopping and social outings to learning new skills in familiar community settings.

This means our Support Workers don’t just assist with tasks, they walk alongside individuals as they explore new experiences, build confidence and take part in community life on their terms.

Social Connection through Group Programs

Participation often starts with connection — having a space where people can meet, build friendships, and share experiences. Our Social Support groups — regular weekly and monthly activities — provide exactly this.

These groups are offer opportunities to belong, have fun, and grow social networks. Whether it’s Adventure Days, Wellness Wednesdays or WRAP Social nights, our participants are building relationships, discovering interests and broadening their community participation every week. Monthly social groups like Saturday Youngsters and Funday Sundays offer weekend activities for all ages and abilities to connect and participate.

Y Camps and that inspire Independence

Our Respite Camps boost everyday inclusion into memorable shared experiences. Multi-day camps are all about having fun while they foster connection, independence, skill development and personal growth.

Participants learn to navigate new environments, try new activities, and form friendships — all while being supported by skilled, caring staff. These experiences ripple back into everyday life, boosting confidence and encouraging participants to take on new challenges in their communities.

Support Coordination that keeps goals on track

Everyday inclusion often requires more than just individual effort — it needs support and connection to the right services. Our Disability Support Coordination team helps participants and their families understand their NDIS plans, connect with suitable services, and make informed decisions that align with personal goals.

This coordination means participants aren’t navigating complex systems alone — they have a partner helping them create opportunities for genuine community participation.

Everyday Inclusion in Action — Real Impact

The impact of this approach is clear in the stories we hear from our community. As one family shared in our recent impact report:

“Our son Max has benefited immensely from The Y’s specialised respite services. These person-centred camps have fostered his independence, social connection and confidence… We would be lost without the support.”

Stories like Max’s remind us that participation isn’t just about being there — it’s about building the skills to grow and feeling seen every day.

Inclusion through Participation for all

At the Y, inclusion does not happen by chance — it is intentionally designed through values-led practice. It is woven through programs and services that promote choice, dignity and daily opportunities to participate. By supporting people to be part of their communities, build lasting connections and engage in activities they love, we’re helping shape a world where everyone feels welcome, respected and fully included every single day.
