Community Collaboration: Creating stronger connections together

At Y Inclusion Services, we believe that meaningful community participation is about more than simply being present. It is about feeling connected, valued and included.
Community collaboration sits at the heart of everything we do. When individuals, organisations, support workers, families and local communities work together, opportunities are created for people with disability to build confidence, develop skills, form friendships and actively participate in the world around them.
Building connections through community
Strong communities are built on relationships. By creating inclusive opportunities and removing barriers to participation, we help people access the activities, experiences and connections that matter most to them.
Whether it is joining a social group, participating in sport, learning new skills, volunteering, attending local events or simply spending time with others who share similar interests, community participation can have a profound impact on wellbeing, independence and quality of life.
At Y Inclusion Services, we work alongside participants to help make these connections possible.
Supporting community access through 1:1 Community Support
Community participation looks different for everyone. That is why our 1:1 Community Support service is tailored to each individual's goals, interests and aspirations.
Our support workers assist participants to access and engage with their local community in ways that are meaningful to them. This may include attending community events, participating in recreational activities, visiting local attractions, building everyday life skills, pursuing hobbies, volunteering or simply enjoying social outings.
Y staff carefully match participants with the right support workers, develop individual strategies, and collaborate with families and therapists to create an environment where growth and joy are possible. By providing personalised support, we help participants navigate new experiences, build independence and strengthen their confidence in community settings.
Importantly, these experiences create opportunities for genuine connection. Through regular engagement with local businesses, community groups, sporting clubs and recreational facilities, participants become active contributors to their communities rather than passive observers.
WRAP Basketball: More than a game
Wrap Basketball has been running for 23 years and continues to be a much-loved program within the community. It is coordinated by a dedicated team of 11 volunteers who share roles in coaching, refereeing, and scoring, alongside one paid staff member who helps oversee the program’s operations. Together, they create a welcoming and inclusive environment where participants of all abilities can enjoy the game. As staff member Felicity shares, “It gives everyone something to look forward to, forms a sense of connection, and allows everyone to be themselves and to be celebrated for who they are.”
The success of WRAP Basketball is made possible through collaboration between participants, families, support staff, volunteers and community partners who share a commitment to creating inclusive sporting opportunities for everyone.
Working together for inclusion
Creating inclusive communities is a shared responsibility. It requires collaboration between individuals, families, service providers, community organisations, businesses and local residents.
Whether it is through a basketball game, a community outing, a new friendship or the achievement of a personal goal, every connection helps build a more inclusive future.
Together, we can create communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, connect and reach their full potential.
