6 Tips on how to create the right Support Team around you
Building the right support team can make a huge difference to your independence, confidence, and overall wellbeing. Whether you’re a person with disability, a family member, or someone who uses Respite Camps or Home & Community Support, having the right people around you helps you get the most out of your NDIS plan and feel supported in everyday life. At Y Inclusion Services, we see every day how a strong, connected team empowers people to thrive.
1. Start with what matters most to you
Before choosing supports, take time to think about your goals. What do you want to learn, experience, or be able to do? Your team should be built around your vision—whether that’s building independence, making friends, learning life skills, or getting more involved in your community.
2. Include a mix of people and roles
A great support team is diverse. It may include Support workers, allied health professionals, social groups, community programs, mentors, and of course your family and friends. Formal and informal supports both play an important role. Many people also value a network of peers who have lived experience and understand their journey. This could be online or in real life.
3. Be clear about everyone’s role
Confusion can slow progress. Make sure each team member understands what they’re responsible for and how they’ll work with you. Clear communication—whether by phone, email, or regular meetings—helps everyone stay on the same page and ensures your plan stays focused on your goals.
4. Choose people who share your values
The right team is made up of people who listen, respect your choices, and believe in inclusion, empowerment, and dignity. Look for team members who genuinely want to help you grow and who work well with others. A good “fit” matters just as much as qualifications.
5. Keep both formal and informal supports strong
Paid supports are important, but family, friends, neighbours, and community connections add meaning and stability. Social groups, camps, and respite programs also help build confidence and lasting friendships.
6. Review your team regularly
As your goals and needs change, your support team should grow with you. Regular check-ins help ensure you’re still getting the right mix of support.
