What the 2026 NDIS changes mean for you and what stays the same

What the 2026 NDIS changes mean for you and what stays the same

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is currently going through a period of reform across Australia. You may have seen recent news or updates about changes coming into effect from 2026 and beyond and it’s completely understandable that clients and families are asking, “What does this mean for us?”

The most important thing to know is this: many of the details are still being finalised, and most of the significant changes will take place gradually over the next few years, not immediately.

What we know so far

The reforms aim to make the NDIS more consistent, sustainable and focused on supporting people with permanent and significant disability.

However, the rollout will be staged over time, with many key changes not expected until 2027 and 2028.

This means that for now, your current supports and services will continue as they are.

Registered providers: what this means for you

One of the first confirmed changes is the expansion of mandatory provider registration, beginning from mid-2026 and continuing over the coming years.

This change is designed to:

  • Improve quality and safety

  • Ensure providers meet consistent standards

  • Strengthen trust across the sector

For clients and families connected with Y Inclusion Services, this is something you don’t need to worry about as we are already a registered provider.

This means you can feel confident that your supports already meet the requirements being introduced across the sector.

Changes to Support Coordination – still a way off

There has been a lot of discussion about changes to support coordination and plan management, which can understandably cause concern.

What’s important to know is:

  • New approaches to support coordination are not expected until 2027–2028

  • A new system or model is still being developed and consulted on

  • Current arrangements will remain in place in the meantime

In simple terms, nothing is changing right now for your support coordination.

What will feel different?

While your services and supports will remain consistent, you may notice one positive shift.

As part of the broader reforms, there is a stronger focus on:

  • Demonstrating outcomes

  • Ensuring supports align closely with your goals

  • Making sure funding is used in ways that create meaningful impact

This means we will continue working even more closely with you and your family to:

  • Understand what matters most to you

  • Track progress and celebrate achievements

  • Ensure your supports are helping you build independence, confidence and connection

This is not about changing your support, it’s about strengthening it.

Our commitment to you

At Y Inclusion Services our approach has always been:

  • Person-centred

  • Strengths-based

  • Focused on real-life outcomes

The NDIS reforms are reinforcing what we already believe that support should be built around the individual, not the system.

We will continue to:

  • Provide high-quality, safe and inclusive programs

  • Support you to navigate any future changes

  • Advocate alongside you to ensure your needs are met

As more information becomes available, we will keep you informed every step of the way.
